Trattoria Trippa deserves all the praise. I’m so glad I made a reservation for our trip to Milan. It was the best meal we had on our trip of Italy (Florence, Venice and Milan). The servers were friendly, polite and mindful of any food allergies. Every dish was executed perfectly from the drinks (we ordered a coke, but that lemon peel really brought out the flavour of the coke!) to the starters (the olives and veal), to the mains (fish and veal cooked to perfection), the dessert (tiramisu was light and airy and had such a nice mix of aroma and right amount of sweetness) and the espresso (a fruity blend of coffee beans) to end the meal. Truly another level of what I thought I knew about Italian cuisine and the flavours I’ve tasted before this. Trattoria Trippa has set the bar high.
With the need to reserve a month in advance and hearing from people around me how amazing this place is, I was super excited to finally try it. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t quite live up to my expectations. For what’s considered an average price for a trattoria, I expected the portions to be a bit more filling, even though the flavor was very good. I don’t think I’ll come back, and in my opinion, it doesn’t really deserve a 4.7 rating or all the hype.
Trippa was excellent. The mood was electric in this small and unassuming restaurant. Wait staff were good humored and gracious. Realizing not everyone is an expert in Italian wine they asked a few good questions and offered a couple of suggestions with descriptions and I enjoyed my choice. The food was all I had hoped for. The trippa fritta was new to me and a real salty treat. Memories of my mom’s dishes came back to with the lemache and the vitello tonno put a version we had the night before to shame. The classics trippa in vitello ragu was a joy as was the zuppa.
Getting a reservation at Trippa is such a challenge and now I completely get why. So well deserved. Excellent Vitello Tonnato (fork-tender meat with a delicious mousse-like sauce) and their signature Tagliatelle Burro is HEAVENLY (fresh pasta with a satisfying chew and the silkiest butter sauce). Every bit worth the fame. We ordered 3 plates and wiped them clean. Don’t miss the cheesecake for dessert if it’s on. An excellent dining experience from start to finish, and the lovely staff made it that much more enjoyable. If you can get a table, go go go.
Best pasta we’ve ever had… the Tagliatelle melts in your mouth. The seasonal Tortelli was a highlight as well. Of course we enjoyed the classic fried tripe, which we had never tried before. Not pictured was an incredible eggplant stracciatella dish that we loved. And dessert personally loved the cheesecake and my husband enjoyed the panacotta. Every dish 10/10. Service 12/10. Our interactions with all the wait staff, manager, sommelier and head chef made the experience. Worth every penny and then some. We hope we are lucky enough to come back again and again!
