Where Locals Eat in Bucharest.
• bucharest
Guide Commentary
If you want to eat like you’re at a local’s home, Bucătărașul is the spot. Tucked away in the Jewish neighborhood, it’s a no-frills, family-run place where the tables are close, the lights are warm, and the vibe is relaxed—no crowds, just real talk and good food. Locals come for the sarmale, pomana porcului, and papanași, all made with care and served in hearty portions. The staff treats you like a regular, even if it’s your first time. Prices are fair, and the courtyard’s perfect for a laid-back meal. Skip the Old Town hype—this is where Bucharest eats when it wants something honest and satisfying.

Decided to try a „less touristic“ place and stumbled upon this place. I ordered pomana porcului and papanasi. The food was tasty and satisfying. It’s nothing overly fancy, but it feels homey and local - a good spot to enjoy Romanian food. Considering the quality and portion sizes, the prices are very fair. The waiter was friendly and relaxed, spoke English well, and even asked if everything was okay with the food. Appreciated gesture in a restaurant, sadly not common in many other places in Romania, especially to a tourist like me. The atmosphere was pleasant; the outdoor tables could have been a little bit cleaner, but that’s not a big deal. One small thing I only noticed later: there’s already a 10% service fee included in the bill, and I added another 12% tip on top without realizing. But that’s okay because the waiter deserved it. Regarding the special price offers or lunch menus that some others seem to complain about: as far as I understood, those are subscription deals for regular guests, not one-time visitors. The regular prices are still very fair, so there’s really nothing to complain about. All in all, I was satisfied and would come back next time with my partner.
Great place to try some Romanian food in a nice atmosphere. The beers were good and we enjoyed the cabbage pork rolls and the pork stew. Finish off the meal with a papanasi to make the experience complete.
Google brought me to Restaurant Bucătărașul. It's a humble family owned eatery serving traditional Romanian cuisine within the Jewish Neighborhood, away from bustling Old Town. Had the Mixed Veggie Salad & Chicken with Mushrooms Cream & Mashed Potatoes. The starter salad was fresh & i really enjoyed the main dish. Portions were generous. Dan was kind & welcoming. He showed warm hospitality to all the patrons & wished me a safe flight home. I highly recommend giving this place a try. This is the place for a homecooked Romanian meal. Glad i ventured out & dined here for lunch. Would return in the future. 💜
It is a restaurant in the Jewish part of Bucharest. Nicely decorated, the service was impeccable and the food was nice. They serve typical Romanian food. We wanted a table inside because it was hot outside on the terrace. It was no problem, they put the air-conditioning on.
Passing through with my wife, we were eager to try authentic Romanian cuisine. The experience left us with mixed feelings. On one hand, the host was attentive and courteous, serving food promptly and noticing every detail—our plates were cleared the moment we finished. On the other hand, the quality of the meat in the stew could have been better, as some pieces were nearly impossible to chew. The prices were reasonable, which was a plus, but we didn’t quite get the culinary delight we had hoped for. It was decent, but nothing more. Would I recommend this place to my friends? Probably not. Of course, this is just my personal opinion—I don’t intend to offend anyone or be politically incorrect, but I also don’t want to sugarcoat the experience.
