This was my first time having Basque cuisine. The worst part of this experience was that I visited here during a cruise and can't eat it again tomorrow. The ambiance was incredible, and the staff and chef were happy to explain each dish without us even asking. Each dish was cooked near enough to perfection that a simple raw tomato was an experience in and of itself. I don't even like raw tomato, but I enjoyed every bite of mine. Wine pairings were on point. Best oysters I have ever had. And the octopus? I don't even know where to begin...
Let me start with: The difficulty with the google rating system is that I can’t give halves. This would’ve been a solid 4,5. The food is excellent. Is it worth the money? I don’t know; it depends. Some dishes like the Ox steak, the grilled octopus, and the gooseneck barnacles are worth the money. Others like the soufflé not as much. What does make the evening is Nixon (if that is even spelt right). He is extremely friendly and made the night. He’ll happily have some short chats with you and makes you feel at home. Slightly disappointed that he left without saying bye though. I’ve enjoyed the food and the night here, but I still see some room for improvement here and there. I’m pretty sure however that you will have a decent dinner here.
I have celiac and was very happy they were able to accommodate me. Honest review: we ordered approx £300 worth of food and can say the wine and the sole fish was worth ordering. Everything else was bland and disappointing. We ordered the roasted pig in its own juices and it was dry- they recommended two dishes that were not listed.. at £47 each.. for 4 little artichokes with a bland peanut sauce, and another - basically a gelatinous mushroom dish with a poached egg with very little flavor. The presentation was beautiful but the taste was disappointing.
Only a block and a half from the Guggenheim. The entry was slightly intimidating. The staff was very welcoming and advised half rations when I couldn’t decide. This was my Camino splurge. The curried beef tongue roll was exquisite- my first attempt at tongue. The tomato salad was everything the waiter promised. The bread and oil stopped me in tracks. Normally I throw a meal down- I just had to stop: what makes this bread so incredible? Then the rye, then the seeded. The pulpo came with Forever 21 style glitter that I was reluctant to consume. After confirming that it was food, I enjoyed the bronze mango beads. This is a place to savor the food. The only thing that would have made it better was to be with the love of my life planning our next 39 years together.
The restaurant has a great design. We ordered three dishes to share They split them between us. The dishes looked and tasted amazing. The service and servers were very good.
