Nice pub with authentic feel. Took a bit of time to get seated but once that was done service was good. Food was just OK, was hoping to eat the slow cooked pork belly but apparently it's no longer in the menu. Had wild boar sausages instead which tasted disappointingly tame, though the sauce was great.
When visiting the John Knox Home Museum, the woman helping us suggested this place. It's a rainy Wednesday early evening and although it was busy in this small restaurant, we were seated within 10 minutes without a reservation. We were intrigued by the story, but impressed with the food for its creativity, freshness, and robust flavors. We started with the Pulled Beef Rib Croquettes and Aspargus & Feta Salad with peas & mint. Both starters were fantastic and bursting with flavor. For dinner we chose a Pulled Mushroom Chilli with black beans, parsley Bismanti Rice, and guacamole and a small salad. Also we shared Salmon Fishcakes & Vintage Cheddar with a side salad with lots of delicious veggies and three times cooked fries. For desert we shared a Blackberry Elderberry Eton Mess. It was not too sweet, but full of flavor with meringue slivers for a crunch.
The food was good, it was very pub like not as fancy as I thought it would be when I first walked in. I think overall it was a great time, the only down side was when the server came and just stood looking at us without asking what we would like to order, just expecting us to talk. But there was a girl server who was absolutely super kind! Overall this is a good place, and it’s really clean inside. Make sure to allot time for food because it will be a long wait.
A very pleasant and delicious experience! The restaurant has a traditional feel which me and my friends liked a lot. Fish&chips was an excellent dish here! Also the drinks were tasty. Good, friendly service! I would definitely visit again.
We ordered the day's special menu (starter - fried pork / main - shellfish dishes), both of which were so nice. The waiter was quick and kind (especially, explanation of the dishes). On the whole, we were satisfied with the service, dishes and the genuine atmosphere there.
